My Fox Business Network Appearance – By Mutnodjmet
I wanted to share with you my experiences on the Fox Business Network, as I think there are some solid lessons to be learned that might help the whole “Tea Party” movement.
To catch everyone up to speed, as I became involved in the local Tea Party movement, I got a close-up
look at the state GOP and didn’t care for what I saw. Also, I thought I might be more effective if I went back to my original party – the Democratic Party. They didn’t always like big spending, per this quote from Thomas Jefferson:
A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned – this is the sum of good government.
Prior to my guest appearance last week, radio talk show host Leslie Marshall (left-wing flame thrower from LA) was on Neil Cavuto. She managed to really anger Cavuto with her dismissal of the Tea Parties. Before you watch my appearance, you
should watch this clip of Cavuto and Marshall for background.

Prior to going on, I was told I would be in a “debate”. I didn’t know with who, nor did I know anything about Marshall or this appearance. I prepped myself on what I thought would be the focus of the topic (i.e., would raising or lowering taxes be best to reduce the deficit, and can we trim back government). I headed over to the studio, and sat down to chat. Here are the results:

I wish I had more makeup, and powder. Also, since I am not use to the format, I need to remember to smile at the camera when they aren’t talking to me (I am hearing impaired, so I really concentrate when the host and the other guest speak). I think I did OK, especially as my team got several emails requesting more information on local tea parties.
So, the next day the Fox Business Network producer calls. Cavuto was watching the segment and nearly burst a gut laughing
at the bit when I inform Leslie I was a Democrat.
Apparently, it seems Leslie was poised to go off on the “covert Republican operation” mode, and was forced to switch gears. She switched to go to a topic-based analysis, and it seems in the end, her views did not significantly differ from my own — as the host of America’s Nightly Scoreboard pointed out.
The FBN team LOVED it. Marshall was reported to have asked where they found “the one Democratic Tea-bagger”.
* Cost of gas to get to the studio: $1.25.
* Price of a tube of lipstick: $10.
* Pulling the rug out of a standard ultra-liberal derision about the Tea Parties: Priceless.
There are some lessons to be learned here, and I am in the process of digesting them to better share them with other on my blog:
* I think people are tired of “flame-throwers” on both sides, and a
” flame-thrower” cannot cope well with reasoned respect, even in the face of disagreement. I am glad did NOT try to do an “Ann Coulter”. It would have ended horribly for me (Marshall would have walked all over me) and we wouldn’t have gotten so much discussed.
* I think, based on the responses I am seeing at my group, that Democrats are longing to get back to their Jeffersonian roots (we got about 10 specific requests for information from my group, including three specifically from Dems who wanted to do a Tea Party). It is something that savvy Libertarians or Third Party people could use, especially in heavily blue states. Consider
infiltrating the red areas in red states, the blue one in blue states, then meet at the national level and be “bipartisan”, spreading the ideals of smaller government to all. Maybe not, but I think it worth “thinking outside the box”.
Re: My Fox Business News Appearance – SSG Conway
You did well, and I think that there is a career calling for you here. BTW, I have also considered switching to my father’s party and going Democrat. (I’d hoped that SEN James Webb would’ve done more to provide cover for the switch, as his being a gun-carrying, tatooed combat vet who has actually killed people, in addition to having been Reagan’s Sec. Navy, makes it hard to caricature him as a typical wussy liberal.)
The GOP is the Party of Louis XVIII – learned nothing & forgotten nothing. I dread having to see a Gingrich/Romney ticket in 2012. They are effectively DOA, with a few exceptions, here, as well. That does not make the Democrats, minus Webb, any less offensive. I do think that they are, however, more ‘democratic,’ in the sense that their grass roots has a better chance of changing things that do their GOP counterparts, who are cynically milked for money and votes.
That said, what chance is there of having any success against the activist Left that holds the Dems hostage? Little, I think. As cover for operating in states like Michigan that are deep blue, perhaps there is value – it makes one ‘legit,’ and not subject to dismissal as a racist, etc. Beyond that, it will take the coming failure and de-legitimization of the federal government to break minds free from the thrall of statism that grips both heads of our duopoly.
Congratulations, Leslie, on a well-thought-out and well-executed foray onto their turf. We’re far from having turned the tide, but like COL Doolittle, you’ve dropped some payload on their home turf, and that is a sorely-needed light in the spreading darkness.
