What Were You Thinking, Mr. Steele?

March 2, 2009 – 2:48 pm

What the hell!?!?!?!!!!!

Michael Steele, why did you do this? Rush was very kind to you, had you on his show, set you up with (mostly) softball questions. And now you feel you must bow to the “wisdom” of the Democrat DC crowd and the liberal MSM by throwing Rush under the bus?

Rush gave a superb speech at CPAC, summarizing eloquently what American conservatism is all about. And you call him merely an entertainer. Did it ever occur to you or your pals in the media that one can be both an entertainer AND a very knowledgeable and eloquent political commentator? This either-or business is a page from the Democrat playbook. Drop it. It’s a bad playbook.

Is it because Rush doesn’t kowtow to moderates? Is it a racial thing? Is it because Rush doesn’t automatically support whatever the GOP leadership says or does? Is it because he said he hoped Obama fails, when we all know darned well that if Obama succeeds, America would become a socialist dictatorship? I certainly hope Obama fails. Is it because Rush isn’t a Republican fundraiser? Is it because he was a college drop out? Is it an East Coast stuck up sort of thing?

You certainly set the liberals up with your nice, juicy anti-Rush quote. Check out what this liberal site had to say about it:

This little nugget may have passed some people by, but after Rush Limbaugh’s speech at CPAC, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele went on D.L. Hughley’s CNN show and called Rush an entertainer. Steele was already trying to do damage control.

Just in case any of you didn’t feel like watching the clip, Steele said, ‘So let’s put it into context here. Let’s put it into context here. Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. Rush Limbaugh, his whole thing is entertainment. He has he is an incendiary. Yes, it’s ugly.’ So even before Rahm Emanuel threw gasoline on the fire on yesterday’s Face The Nation, Steele already saw that he had a problem. I think Steele’s problem is even bigger than he can possibly imagine.

I have to give him credit for having the guts to go toe to toe with Rush. Recently, Republicans have shown themselves to be complete cowards when it comes to criticizing Limbaugh, and with good reason, he has a huge conservative audience that he can use to make or break a Republican politician. However, the party could fence Limbaugh in if it wanted to simply by freezing him out. Yes, he has a big audience, but if Republicans started showing favor to other conservative talkers, or if the party could unify in saying that Limbaugh doesn’t speak for them, then he could be marginalized.

You’ll note how this particular liberal blogger and others like him despise freedom of speech. Anyone they disagree with is to be frozen out. Do you want to cooperate with this liberal nonsense?

Republican conservatives are not cowards for refusing to criticize Rush. We like what Rush says. Why on Earth would we criticize someone for saying the things we believe? Why would we cooperate with anyone, Republican or Democrat, who wants to freeze him out?

The pull quote and a link to the CNN clip can be found here.

I left part of this commentary at Michael Steele’s Facebook site here. The site doesn’t accept long posts.

  2. I have to say that the people who are organizing the Tea Party revolts want little to do with the GOP: They are part of the problem. That Steele could dismiss as “Ugly” the speech that Rush gave highlights with the RNC is not getting donations or support from grassroots efforts. I suspect Steele will have a retraction and clarification later.

  3. Just as I predicted: Steele offered a retraction and clarification.

  5. “My intent was not to go after Rush – I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh,” Steele said in a telephone interview. “I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. … There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership.”

Frankly, I’m not buying it. Steele knows he’s in “deep doodoo” on this one.

  6. I almost hate to say this (well nearly almost?) but Limbaugh IS and “entertainer”. He has stated so clearly and repeatedly over the years and in both of his books. Emphatically on his “Rush to Excellence tour”, on his TV show and in numerous other times and places.

His format for entertainment is espousing Conservative ideals which he strongly believes in and showing up the hypocrisies of liberals and demoncrats.

The Fact remains that he IS a radidio ENTERTAINER. It is his stock in trade which he has built into enormous success which illustrates his great points on self-sufficiency and hard work in free enterprise being the path that is most logical and successful.

His whole shtick is about entertainment value. To make him out to be something other than that is just a mistake. If you asked him personally, I’d bet he’d validate my entire statement. Being an entertainer doesn’t invalidate his world view or political opinions but its pointless to make him out to be something other than what he is by his own repeated statements.
