Every Nation Has a Right to Defend Itself

January 3, 2009 – 7:32 pm

Israel is apparently locked in a death struggle with Hamas.  If the Palestinian Authority was governed my reasonable people, Israel would still have the right of self-defense in time of war.  Hamas is not reasonable, and they will not be missed.
The road to war is paved with foolishness.  Our insistence in worshipping democracy led to Hamas getting control of the levers of power.  Our being one-sided in our dealings in the reigon encouraged Israeli instrangience, and gave credence to the Arab extremists’ call for jihad.  If we had not involved ourselves, a nuclear-armed Israel might have found commin ground with her neighbors about how to best divide their con nom ground.  At least for the forsseable future, that chance is lost.  A victors’ peace will be imposed, and I’d put my money on Israel to win.  What will follow?  More hate, more jihad, fewer moderates on either side to speak out, and the likely displacement of the West Bank Palestinians, by force.  Our world will be the darker for this, and our share in it is to have empowered hard-liners on both sides.
We need to abandon Woodrow Wilson’s foolish, utopian legacy in favor of the wisdom of Washington, Adams, and the rest of the Founding Fathers.  Sadly, our recent election did nothing to move us in that direction.
