Are the Supremes Worth a Vote for McCain?
June 29, 2008 – 8:07 amNo, in my opinion. Why? Seven of nine Supremes are Republican appointees. They range from the generally reliable Scalia to his rubber stamp Thomas to the worthless Souter. Granted, the Dems haven’t had a good pick since at least Whizzer White in 1961. But a McCain Administration, facing 55+ Democrats in the Senate, isn’t going to fight for Scalias. And will he keep a promise to appoint conservative judges anyway? Mac would love to have Sen. Leiberman on the ticket; would that kind of initial staff pick reassure you that his judicial nominations are going to be sound? Mac is also not a thinker – he’s a seat-of-the-pants guy, like W., and he is not widely or deeply read, nor well-traveled, outside military bases and Senate junkets, and is disinterested in policy details. A guy who finished near the bottom of his graduating class, has no schooling since then, and who is your typical school jock is not going to analyze deeply. His advisors will do that, and he’s not surrounded by conservatives. Personnel is policy, and the balance of power among his staff, as in the Senate, will not be for strict construction.
Finally, consider the current Court’s ruling on Gitmo. The ‘conservatives’ tended to support suspension of habeaus corpus, while the ‘liberals’ stood for the Bill of Rights. The issue was already settled law – see Ex Parte Milligan (1866) – and it dosen’t take a genois to see what suspension of civil rights for suspects means for the rest of us. Mac called it one of the Court’s worst decisions. That should be the last word on where his picks would take the court. The only part of the Bill of Rights that would be reasonably safe is the Second Ammendment. Every other liberty that you enjoy would be in play.
In conclusion, we can assume that Obama, like all recent Democrats, would be a disaster, as far as SCOTUS nominations go. Mac would probably not be much better. Given his poor track record elsewhere, why cling to this slender reed? I voted for Reagan three times, then twice for Bush 41, and Dole, and W. in 2000. I voted Constitution Party last time, and will vote Libertarian this time. No more ‘lesser of two evils’ votes from this American! That is the best way, in the long run, to begin rebuilding the respect for our Constitution that like-minded souls seek in hoping for Republican appointees to the Supreme Court. You’re less likely to be dissapointed if you do as I plan to do.

Excellent post. Consider the state of liberty in the context of your views (http://amfree.townhall.com)
Some are of the “let’s wreck it now” school of thought. Let the Dems control everything, destroy much and take down the liberal republicrats with them.
Then the revolution (The Ron Paul Revolution) can begin to happen. Don’t give up rather husband your political ammunition and activism for the ripest time.
Vote for principle, not for pragmatism because pragmatism has gotten us where we are today.
